Order of Canada Songwriting Juggernaut Is At It Again!

Arthur Bergmann is currently writing and arranging new songs at his farm home in Rocky View County, Alberta, for an upcoming album release entitled SHADOWWALK - LEGACY OF LOVE.

Art is in the process of revivification after the death of his darling, Sherri, on March 20th of this year. The new album starts with the despair of grief over his horrendous loss (see “Death Of A Siren”) and runs through the rejuvenation process to his decision to keep living through his songwriting, hopefully finding some hope and peace at the end of it. The album will end with his first hymn, which will be the album’s title track, ”Legacy of Love (Hymn for All of Us).” You can check out Art doing a live take of “Legacy Of Love (A Hymn For Us)” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkTtNSRnoo4, and the official video for “Death Of A Siren” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmIc3S_vW3s.

Art will record demos of his new songs this November and December in Calgary and, ideally, depending on how things proceed, will do the actual recording, mixing and mastering in Vancouver this spring with additional players.

You can follow along with Art’s musical updates on his Facebook profile www.facebook.com/ArtBergmann1, his Twitter profile www.twitter.com/ArtBergmann and his website www.ArtBergmann.com. You can see some home scenes of Art amidst the process, along with his frolicking feline Spartacus, in this recently shot video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v02zT2Fxb90

“My new album project embodies the love I shared with Sherri Decembrini, my beloved wife. She always believed in me, and she is the biggest part of these songs.” - Art Bergmann

We are very thankful for all your donations to help with this recording; your support for Art and his music is greatly appreciated.

For a minimal donation of $10, you will receive a digital copy of the new album, including a pdf sheet of artwork, lyrics and credit information.

We hope to see the album also released on cd and vinyl editions as Art has expressed a desire to play live shows and even tour in support of its release.

“I thank Russell Broom for summoning up my request for sirenic beauty of old and Sherri for being that siren…double beauty was hatched. Greg Reely realized it.
Naomi and Zoe must carry on and so must I.
Thank you to Kenneth for the broodingly beautiful video he shot, Thor for the surreal video edit, and to Jason, Phil and TeamArt for moving this out into a callous world.”

As Canada’s punk poet laureate, Art Bergmann has been tearing up stages, and terrifying the music industry, for half a century. Often referred to as “Canada’s Lou Reed,” Art’s story is one of rock and roll’s great tales untold. Until now. From his days helping to lay the foundation of the Vancouver punk scene with The K-Tels, to his acclaimed solo work in the ’80s and ’90s, and a late career resurgence that has culminated with being named to the Order of Canada, The Longest Suicide chronicles every unlikely twist and turn Art’s life has taken.

Anyone who thought the Order of Canada would tame Art Bergmann was wrong. Deeply wrong. The singer-songwriter is as biting and anti-establishment as ever, demonstrated by his latest album, Late Stage Dementia Empire, and his unflinching opinions on his country’s failings. Jessica and George talk with the veteran of Canada’s music scene about residential schools, music, allyship, colonialism, and more.

And there’s lots of music to puncutate the conversation—who needs commas when you’ve got rock ‘n’ roll?

Art Bergmann / Late Stage Empire Dementia / (weewerk)

“2014’s Songs For the Underclass EP and 2016’s The Apostate surprised enough, after two decades of Bergmann’s battles with drug/alcohol addiction, arthritis, and backaches. To get this fiery, deep solo album in 2021 feels miraculous. Following fantastic, 1979-1980 punk-era Vancouver band The Young Canadians and equally short stints in Los Popularos and Poisoned, he’s been a venerated Canuck solo artist, his social conscience retained; last year he even became a Member of the Order of Canada, his country’s second-highest honor. But to heck with laurels-resting, he’s the best kind of protest singer, sticking his (and our) maw in the midst the fascist leanings of modern ultra-conservative parties—especially ours. His older forebear in such unadulterated critique, The MC5’s Wayne Kramer, joins him on a roasting anti-religious-right takedown, “Christo-Fascists” (which musically alludes to The Stooges’ “Loose”). But it’s his own songs and playing on “Entropy,” “Amphetamine Alberta,” etc., that’s as ballsy as YC’s “No Exit” over 40 years ago. Highly involving.” – Jack Rabid / The Big Takeover

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 19, 2021

TORONTO ON – Art Bergmann’s music is meant for our current times. As we struggle to make sense of world events and the conflicts they have spawned, Art’s songwriting – as it has consistently done for the past four decades – cuts through the bullshit and hypocrisy with unflinching focus with the aim of finding some remnants of humanity that will pull us through.

It’s what used to be called “punk rock” when Art first established his reputation in Vancouver during the late 1970s, even though he’s never been a fan of that term. Yet, his status as one of Canadian punk’s foundational artists remains unquestionable, to the extent that in late 2020 he became the first of his peers to receive the Order of Canada, an honour bestowed upon the country’s most revered cultural figures.

Art’s latest album, Late Stage Empire Dementia, will be released May 21, 2021 – also Endangered Species Day – on Toronto-based (weewerk), and pointedly demonstrates why he deserved the OC. On eight songs that sonically run the gamut from the jagged, speaker-shredding rock he’s long been known for, to the experimental, acoustic-based soundscapes he introduced on his 2016 Polaris Music Prize long-listed album The Apostate, he takes aim at political corruption, the dual unchecked epidemics of guns and drugs, and the plight of refugees yearning for a better life.

Art Bergmann is an eponymous album by Art Bergmann, originally released in 1991 on cd and cassette by Polygram. Produced by Chris Wardman the album was recorded and mixed at Manta Sound in Toronto and included the charting singles “Faithlessly Yours”, “If She Could Sing”, and “Message from Paul”.

The 2017 re-release is entitled Remember Her Name which is the lead song from the album, a tribute to Marianne Faithful. Art initially wanted to call the song “Marianne Faithful” but his label at the time were concerned about the legalities and made him change the name of the song, which became “Remember Her Name”. The new re-release was re-mastered by Noah Mintz at Lacquer Channel Mastering and includes the unreleased bonus track “Wide On/Hard Body” which was recorded during the original sessions. The re-release also contains new artwork composed of recent photos by longtime friend and photographer Sharon Steele, and photographer Lisa MacIntosh, who shot portraits of Art for her Great Hall series.

“The Apostate” is Art Bergmann’s first full length of new material since the Juno winning “What Fresh Hell Is This” and is the follow up to his well-received 2014 ep release “Songs For The Underclass”. Mesmerizing and masterful, “The Apostate” displays a rejuvenated singer songwriter who at the top of his lyrical game, has pushed his sound significantly, creating some of his most dynamic songs ever recorded.
